Magazine advertisements, matrimonial classified advertisements, film and music industries, and fashion magazine editorials promote skin-lightening cosmetics and personal products by taking advantage of this cultural perspective.
Matrimonial advertisements are the top revenue earners of many Indian newspapers.
But 90 out of 100 matrimonial ads list a woman's fair, very fair and really fair skin as a prerequisite to her acceptance as a beautiful woman.
A classic case of how fair skin has been glamourised is the advertisement of a fairness cream which shows how a woman is denied a job because of her skin pigment, but later when she emerges from a fairness regimen, the job is instantly hers.
This perception has also seeped into the product range catering to male vanity with the launch of a fairness cream exclusively for men.The phrase 'tall, dark and handsome' man will soon need to be rephrased.

Marketing Blunder: Vaseline's Skin Bleaching Product
Here’s the 21st century perspective on the skin bleaching issue we are ever so family with. How do you effectively market a product that so many find offensive and racist, while so many others find necessary and lucrative.Men are not far behind in buying these fairness creams and lotions almost religiously. According to a recent study by Hindustan Lever, men in southern states likeKerala, Tamilnadu,Karnatak, and Andhra Pradsh are enthusiastic users of skin whitening creams. A report appeared on the Economic Times says that the sales of skin whitening creams are also high in Chhattisgarhand Jharkhand states which have a bigger tribal population.
People mus understand that using fairness creams cannot change anyone’s fortune except the stars who are endorsing it.
Piggy Chops Wants You To Buy “Fairness” Cream!
Quite dissapointed with
PC’s choice of this latest endorsement especially since she claims (in so many interviews) that she’s proud of her skin-colour despite loosing out on many roles (cause of our society’s fixation with being gora)…and next thing you know she’s the face of
Garnier’s fairness cream.
Such mixed messages!
Fairness Cream endorsement by Preity Zinta
JOHN ABRAHAM LAUNCHES GARNIER MEN
Preity doesn’t mind endorsing a fairness cream. Very recently we found John endorsing men’s fairness cream. Fairness creams are a way of life so much so that boys can sneak into girls’ rooms to steal some of it. In a country like India where people crave for fairness only, fairness creams are a part of the daily make up.
How do you find Preity in the fairness cream Ad – Fab or Drab?
I love her lip color.

Ranbir Kapoor says no to fairness cream endorsement
Ranbir Kapoor has been unfair, or so some brand officials will say. The actor recently turned down a highly lucrative offer when a famous fairness cream brand approached him to be the brand ambassador for a period of two years. Ranbir, they say, does not believe in endorsing such products.By not endorsing a product like a fairness cream, the actor wants to reiterate that such products only make racist stereotypes that already exist in our society, grow stronger roots.
