 Magazine advertisements, matrimonial classified advertisements, film and music industries, and fashion magazine editorials promote skin-lightening cosmetics and personal products by taking advantage of this cultural perspective.

Matrimonial advertisements are the top revenue earners of many Indian newspapers.
But 90 out of 100 matrimonial ads list a woman's fair,very fair and really fair skin as a prerequisite to her acceptance as a beautiful woman.

A classic case of how fair skin has been glamourised is the advertisement of a fairness cream which shows how a woman is denied a job because of her skin pigment, but later when she emerges from a fairness regimen, the job is instantly hers.

This perception has also seeped into the product range catering to male vanity with the launch of a fairness cream exclusively for men.The phrase 'tall, dark and handsome' man will soon need to be rephrased.

Quite dissapointed with PC’s choice of this latest endorsement especially since she claims (in so many interviews) that she’s proud of her skin-colour despite loosing out on many roles (cause of our society’s fixation with being gora)…and next thing you know she’s the face of Garnier’s fairness cream.

Katrina was named the brand ambassador of cosmetic giant Olay's Natural White cream.

Ranbir Kapoor has been unfair, or so some brand officials will say. The actor recently turned down a highly lucrative offer when a famous fairness cream brand approached him to be the brand ambassador for a period of two years. Ranbir, they say, does not believe in endorsing such products.By not endorsing a product like a fairness cream, the actor wants to reiterate that such products only make racist stereotypes that already exist in our society, grow stronger roots.
